1974 Lola T332 Formula 5000 Project
Crashed. Needs a new tub and rebuild from the roll bar forward.
Sold October, 2024
History
The history of this Lola is unclear to us. We have reviewed the owner’s file (he is now deceased so we cannot ask him) on the car. Many of the records and receipts refer to the car as HU57, the Richard Shirey car that was also driven by Alan Jones. However, we do not see documentation directly linking this car to the Shirey car. We also know from the file that the owner built this car from a “spare Lola T332 chassis.” We also know from the chassis tag on the car at the time of the crash, and receipts in the file, that at the time of the accident the car was riding on a Marc Bahner built tub.
So at this point we are selling the car as a T332 built up from Lola pieces and a Bahner tub. It may, or may not, be related to the Richard Shirey car.
Although this car’s early history is as yet unclear, its most recent history is documented by race records and the car’s log book.
The log book shows the Lola racing after its restoration from 2013 to 2020. These included a total of 10 races at tracks including the Circuit of the Americas, Road Atlanta, Road America, and Sonoma Raceway. The car crashed at Road America in 2020.
Subsequent to the crash, the car was stripped of its usable parts, and other parts kept for potential patterns. The tub was returned to Marc Bahner to craft a new tub from the remains of the old tub. Bodywork repair was also commenced. It was at this point that the owner passed away. So the car remains either a project to complete, or spares from the roll bar back as well as existing spares that the owner already had (wheels, springs, steering rack, front upright parts, seat, gauges, two spare rear wings, etc.
In addition to the foregoing, a fresh long block 305 c.u. engine with intake manifold, Dart aluminum heads, and injector trumpets, etc. is also available.
Description
Receipts and records in the file show that the 305 Chevy with Kinsler fuel injections was rebuilt in 2017 by Motor Masters in Hartford, Wisconsin. It has AFR heads, JE Pistons, L.A. Kryptonite crank, Crower connecting rods and rockers, Manley valve springs, MSD ignition, Aeroquip lines and fittings, Vertex cap and rotor, and more. According to the log book, the engine has a total of six race weekends on it.
The gearbox is a Hewland DG 300. The brakes are AP Lockheed with ventilated discs.
Many receipts are included in the file..
This is a great project to wind up with arguably the best Formula 5000 model ever built. If you already have one, this will be about the most inexpensive way for you to acquire everything from the roll bar back including a strong engine and gearbox, plus a host of other parts and spares.
As mentioned the Lola is part of an estate liquidation. It is going to get sold. If you are seriously interested, please contact us. Feel free to make an offer.
