1989-92 Ken Schrader NASCAR Chevy Lumina

Dover Winner. 5th at Sonoma. Hendrick Motorsports.

Damaged engine. Now just $24,500.

History

Update: The Lumina’s engine was damaged at the 2024 Velocity Invitational NASCAR race. As a result the price has been cut in half to $24,500. Great winter project, especially if you already have access to an engine.

The Lumina began its racing career at Hendrick Motorsports in 1989 with red and gold Folgers Coffee livery and Ken Schrader behind the wheel. The car was built by Hendrick on a Laughlin intermediate chassis, chassis number KML9. In 1991, the livery was changed to new sponsor Kodiak.

The number 25 Kodiak car won the Budweiser 500 at Dover, and also finished  5th at the Banquet Frozen Foods 300 at Sonoma Raceway.

The Kodiak car was later restored by well known NASCAR expert Gene Felton with updated larger brakes. The car has since competed in vintage races with  CSRG, HSR, SVRA, and CVAR.

The current owner purchased the Lumina in 2017. He has raced the car approximately two times per year since. It’s most recent races were the Mitty at Road Atlanta,  and the Velocity Invitational at Sonoma Raceway, both in 2024.

Description

The Lumina now has a broken  TOE Performance (Tony Oddo) engine. The engine is still in the car, and is mated to the car’s Jerico transmission.

Nearly $20,000 was spent on the Lumina to prepare it for the 2024 season. The car ran one full race weekend at the Mitty, and the engine broke during the qualifying race at the Velocity event. So the car is still pretty fresh off the track.

This is a great way to buy a pro-prepared period winning NASCAR stock car for very low dollars. You can put a full house NASCAR engine in it, or put a crate engine in it and have fun vintage racing or on track days, or both.

The Lumina is currently located in Northern California.
