History
The Pro Formula Mazda Championship series was a spec series for Mazda powered carbon fiber composite monocoque formula cars from 2004 through 2017. The cars were built by Star Mazda, and were powered by 1.3 liter, 260 h.p. Mazda Renesis rotary engines.
This particular Pro Formula Mazda was constructed in 2008, but did not actually race until 2019. As a result it has only 10 races lifetime on it. The car has been pro-maintained at Sonoma Raceway during its entire racing career, which has included multiple victories in the Formula Car Challenge Series. It also received new lightweight body panels, paint, and sponsorship livery before being raced.
Description
This 2008 Pro Formula Mazda (PFM) is in excellent condition, with very low time on the chassis and a completely fresh, zero-mile engine. The chassis has seen fewer than twelve races since new, and the car remains exceptionally straight, as confirmed during a recent full bumpsteer, alignment, and scaling. The corner weights came in within just a couple of pounds of each other.
The Mazda Renesis rotary engine was built in 2024 by Daryl Drummond and his team—widely regarded as the premier builders of these motors during the Pro Mazda Series. The engine is entirely new, including block, rotors, and internals, and is paired with a brand-new Tilton clutch and flywheel. Supporting systems have been upgraded with a new Petersen external oil pressure regulator, Canton remote oil filter, fresh oil lines, and a new taillight.
Additional new components include:
- Sabelt seat belts, FIA certified through 2029
- Varley Red Top battery
- Three sets of BBS wheels: 2 sets with Avon slicks, 1 set with low-mileage Avon rains
The car features the robust carbon composite tub for which PFMs are known, along with pushrod inboard suspension and two-way adjustable Ohlins remote reservoir dampers. The Hewland FTR 6-speed sequential gearbox is fitted with a “short stack” gear ratios suited for West Coast tracks and is supported by Hewland specialists such as Taylor Race Engineering and Scott Young.
Inside the cockpit, the optional Momo/Motec steering wheel replaces the traditional dash and provides advanced driver controls, including traction control, fuel mixture, pit lane speed limiter, and more. Suspension is also cockpit adjustable, and of course the front and rear wing are adjustable.
The PFM’s 260 h.p. rotary engine delivers speeds exceeding 160 mph and is more powerful than USF2000 engines, while offering an astounding 6,000-mile service life. Maintenance and shop logbooks accompany the car.
This Pro Formula Mazda is prepared and maintained by a pro shop. It is genuinely race-ready. It is also very versatile: eligible for SCCA competition, the Formula Car Challenge (FCC) Series—where these cars are proven winners— VARA, SVRA, NASA, track days, other clubs, etc. It is equally suited as a cost-effective practice car for drivers preparing for higher-level machinery such as historic Formula One or prototype racing.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step out of a vintage racing car, like a Formula Ford, Formula B, Formula Super Vee, or Formula Atlantic, and see what it is like to drive the kind of modern technology you watch racing on television? Ever feel concerned about your safety while racing a 70 year old tube frame, or early monocoque open wheel car? These PFM cars provide not only modern technology, but also more safety and security. Faster and safer. What’s not to like there?
With its low-time chassis, zero-mile fresh engine, and a host of new components, this car represents exceptional value. If you have ever owned and raced a vintage formula car competitively, you know what we are talking about. This PFM offers modern, professional-level technology and performance for a fraction of the cost of comparable formula cars – and it’s an E-Ticket ride. Fabulous.
