History
The racing history for this car is amazing. But let’s first start at the beginning.
This Miata is special in that it has always been a race car from day one. Mazda provided this 1999 Miata to well known SCCA racer, Jim Daniels, in 2000 to race with in SCCA. Daniels qualified for, and raced, the Miata at the 2000 Runoffs in Showroom Stock B (“SSB”).
Following the Runoffs Daniels elected to prepare the car for the SCCA’s E-Production (“E/P”) class. His shop began disassembling the car and preparing the chassis for the rigors of E/P class racing. At that time the roll bar was also integrated into the car’s structure. However, before they completed the car, Daniels’ plans changed. That change resulted in the Miata being sold to Terry Jesk in 2001 as a race-prepared rolling chassis without running gear.
Jesk completed the car and was issued the car’s first official logbook as an E- Production race car. This occurred at tech inspection on October 10, 2001. The car made its official race debut as an E Production car on April 26, 2002. Jesk owned the car for 10 years and raced it occasionally until purchased by its current owners, the Reynolds family, on October 24, 2011. The Reynolds still retain all five log books that have been issued since the car began racing in E Production.
Below is a photo of the car, in black, when it was raced by Terry Jesk.
The Reynolds then began the next extraordinary chapter in this Miata’s life. Over the next 10 years this family owned Miata raced 71 times and won an incredible 57 times. Those are not “podium scores,” those are outright overall victories. That’s an over 80% success rate. For a relative comparison, three time and likely soon-to-be four time, F1 World Champion, Max Verstappen, has a win percentage of just over 30%. That’s way less than half that of this Miata.
In addition, the Miata also set 14 new track records. The car also recorded the fastest race lap 35 times. This Miata was number one in the country eight times before heading to the SCCA Runoffs. But there’s more.
The Miata became SCCA National Champion three times. It won in 2014, 2016, and 2018. SCCA Runoffs Archive. The car almost won in 2013 too, but was penalized for a last lap bump pass for the lead and was relegated to fourth in the final results. You can see the car’s dramatic come-from-behind drive after spinning out of the lead in the 2013 SCCA E/P Runoffs Video. Notice that during the car’s furious charge back to the front that it was lapping over two seconds faster than the front runners. You can also see the car in action winning at the 2014 Runoffs, 2016 Runoffs, and the 2018 Runoffs.
Still further, the Miata also won the SCCA “Super Sweep.” The Super Sweep is the most difficult feat to accomplish in SCCA Road Racing. To win it, you must win the Runoffs, win the Hoosier Super Tour points championship, and win the U.S. Majors Tour Conference Points Championship. The Miata did this not only once, but twice.

This Miata is not only a highly competitive SCCA car right now, but also a great long term hold for historic racing. With Miatas now starting to appear at some historic racing events nationwide, we feel it is just a matter of time before we see the best of the best Miatas invited to the biggest stages in historic racing. By then we will probably all wish we bought this car now, at its competitive prime, for pennies on the dollar compared to what its value will be when it is on these historic stages as one of the winningest Miatas in history.
Seriously, just think about the numbers of Miata race cars and drivers that there have been since SCCA started including Miatas on their grids in 1991. It is massive. Then add in all the Mazda Miata street car owners. Now add in Miata fans in general. That’s way too big a number of ticket sales for any race promoter to ignore for long. It will happen. Just look at what’s already happening with MiataCon.
So if you are a Miata fan, or wish you have never sold your Miata race car or street car, or you want to win an SCCA National Championship on your way to a career in motorsports, or if you want to win an SCCA National Championship before you hang up your helmet, or you want a great race car now, and a great historic race car that will be an appreciating asset for as long as you own it, we think that this is the car, and this is the moment.
