History

This Cooper T90, the last of the great Cooper line of formula racing cars, is one of only three. The car’s period racing history is reported at OldRacingCars.com/Cooper T90.

The Cooper later raced in historic races in the U.S. in the 1980’s.  The car is currently located in the U.S. Northeast.

Description

The Cooper is powered by a Chevy 5 liter with a Hewland LG600, five speed gearbox. The current condition of both is unknown. However, there is no obvious damage to either.

The Cooper appears complete. It was most recently owned and raced the past several decades by a well known West Coast, concours winning, race car restorer.  It appears to have been sitting in dry storage for at least a decade or two. It is a bit of a time capsule.

This car represents an opportunity to own a classic early “Class A” monocoque Formula 5000 car. It is also the last of the great line of Championship winning Cooper Formula cars. The only other surviving T90 has already been found and restored. You can see the Peter Rehl T90 at Bonhams Goodwood to get an idea of what this car, chassis #1, can look like when fully gone through. You can also run this car in high or low rear wing configuration. These cars ran both ways, and even without wings, in period.

Where can you get a complete, nearly undamaged (except for the bump on the original alloy nose – probably from moving the car around in the storage garage) classic 1960’s style monocoque Formula 5000 car, one based directly on a contemporary F1 design, for this kind of price? It even still has its original chassis tag on it. The restoration should be very straightforward. The engine is the ubiquitous, relatively inexpensive Chevy 5 liter, and the Hewland LG gearbox is well known and reliable.

This is a great find. Just think how much fun this project is going to be, and the fabulous noises it’s going to make when you fire it up. It is also going to be that super rare show stopper at any upcoming historic racing event.
