1965 Mustang A-Code Fastback Shelby GT 350 Replica
The current owner purchased this car in 2007 from a Mustang restorer in California, where it spent its whole life. The restorer had injured his back and decided to retire from the business. This was one of his last projects. It is an “A-Code” Fastback.
The body shell was stripped to bare metal and etch primed. Over the next several years the car was assembled. The original 289 engine was rebuilt, and a correct, rebuilt, four speed manual transmission was installed to replace the automatic.
The Mustang was painted Wimbledon White, its original color. Original style/color Shelby GT stripes were added, along with the GT 350 decals. A new black interior was installed, along with new brake shoes, brake cylinders, and a new master cylinder and lines. The car currently has its original drum brakes all the way around.
The front suspension is all new, but period correct, including the correct GT350 Koni shocks. The rear suspension also received new shocks and urethane bushings.
A correct Shelby GT high rise intake, air cleaner, and valve covers were installed. A Shelby GT 350 aluminum sump oil pan with baffles was also added. A correct Shelby GT 350 glass pack side exhaust system was installed, complete with the correct Shelby headers. American Racing mags were then bolted on the car.
Many other things were added to the car, such as new front and rear bumpers, and the fiberglass GT 350 hood with scoop. The restoration was done over ten years ago, and the owner cannot now remember all that was done. The car does come with folder containing a substantial amount of receipts.
Since the restoration, the Mustang has logged approximately 25,000 miles. For a period of time it was used as a daily driver. In 2018 the car served as a pace car at Sonoma Raceway for the vintage car races, and was in a parade in southern California. It was then driven from Temecula to San Rafael non-stop with no issues in November, 2018. So it really is a sold daily driver, yet gets a lot of attention.
The downsides are that the body is not perfect. It is a driver level car, not show car, even though it has been in some shows. The car did roll backwards in a parking lot into a fence several years ago, moving the left rear bumper and messing up the paint there (see the photos). In addition, not every original piece was put pack on the car. Anything that was not used, or is extra, is seen in the photos of the parts. There are also a number of brand new parts that have not been installed. So there is more to do if you want to, or you can enjoy it as is.
The drivetrain is very good. The brakes also work fine. The radio is there but does not work. The cigarette lighter, which is missing in the photos, comes with the car. The complete original intake manifold, including the four barrel carburetor, also comes with the car, even though it is not seen in the photos.
The car is ready to go, and can be driven anywhere. It is a real eye catcher, and sounds fabulous.
