History

This Elva, chassis number 70-011, has raced in the U.S. Midwest since the early 1960’s. In 2006, well known vintage racer, Terry Hefty, purchased the Elva from Art Jahn in Wisconsin as an unfinished restoration project. It was complete with its BMW engine, gearbox, chassis, suspension, and 42 boxes of parts!

The restoration was undertaken by Thomas Vintage Motors in Colorado. Thereafter Hefty and the Elva enjoyed many years of successful, highly reliable, racing at tracks including Sebring, Laguna Seca, Mid Ohio, Road America, Circuit of the Americas, and Road Atlanta.

In 2021, Hefty sold the Elva to former Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing (“RMVR”) president, Steve Mercer. Mercer did not race the car long due to illness. His last race in the car was 2022 at COTA. However, the car was continually maintained in race ready condition with annual tech inspections through July 2025, as can be seen in the most recent log book with the car.

The Elva still retains its chassis tag, and comes with FIA HTP papers that were issued in 2010.

Description

The Elva is powered by a 1991 c.c. Nerus BMW engine built by Elva experts Vintage Racing Motors in Redmond, Washington. Dyno sheets show 212 h.p.

The BMW’s power is transmitted through a Hewland five speed gearbox. Damping is controlled by Koni double adjustable aluminum shocks, and braking is handled by four wheel outboard disc brakes. The Avon tires are 5X13 in the front and 6.5X13 in the rear.

Spares include multiple additional wheels of the same style seen on the car in the photos. There are also a couple of tote boxes of used miscellaneous parts.
