Description
The Merlyn’s most recent race was in 2019, and its most recent track days were in 2023. As a result it has little time on its Ivey dry sump engine. The gearbox is a Hewland four speed with period correct metalastic donuts, and comes with gearing for Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, and Thunderhill.
The Merlyn currently rides on Panasport wheels shod with Avon tires. The brakes are Girling disc, and suspension and damping are provided by aluminum shocks and Hyperco springs. Starting power comes from an Odyssey gel cell battery with a remote jumper battery connector.
The seatbelts expired in 2024, so they will need replacement. The car has a Fuel Safe aluminum casing and Eagle bladder that was installed in 2010. There have been no leaks or problems with the fuel cell. The Merlyn has a full complement of Rachtech gauges. An original style mechanical tach will also come with the car.
Also with the car is a new spare body from the U.K., still in its shipping wrapper. The body is finished in British Racing Green. A spare set of steel wheels will also come with the Merlyn. These wheels can be used where race sanctioning bodies require steel wheels.
These Merlyns are the last of the iconic 1960’s “cigar shaped” formula cars. These particular Merlyn Mk11/11A cars are also famous in the Formula Ford world. Success in these Merlyn Mk11A models launched the careers of F1 drivers and future World Champions Emmerson Fittipaldi and Jody Scheckter. Tim Schenken won the 1968 British Formula Ford Championship driving a Merlyn Mk11 and 11A. Colin Vandervell took over the ex-Fittipaldi Mk11A to dominate and win the Les Leston British Formula Ford Championship with no less than 12 victories in a single season. Jody Scheckter would take over the ex-Fittipaldi/Vandervell car to win with it as well, thereby creating the name “Magic Merlyn” for that particular Mk11A Merlyn. Another future F1 driver and World Champion also raced a 1969 Merlyn Mk11A, James Hunt.
The Merlyn Mk11A was a top car to have in the foundational years of Formula Ford. They remain a top car in Historic Formula Ford racing today.
