1971 Hawke DL6B Formula B

Ex-Gary Magwood. Period race winner

$60,000

History

Hawke Racing Cars was a small British constructor founded around the work of David Lazenby, who had spent much of the 1960s at Lotus, including working as a mechanic for Jim Clark and later serving as General Manager of Lotus Components. Lazenby left Lotus and developed the Hawke DL1/DL2 Formula Ford, with Hawke becoming a successful Formula Ford manufacturer in 1969–70. In 1971 Hawke expanded producing the DL5 Formula Super Vee, DL6 Formula B/Formula Atlantic, and DL7 Formula 5000.

The expansion proved financially difficult. Hawke was recapitalized at the end of 1971 and returned its focus largely to Formula Ford. The company later employed young Adrian Reynard as a designer before ceasing operations in 1979.

The car offered here is the ex-Gary Magwood Hawke DL6B, chassis number DL6B/2. Magwood, the Canadian Hawke distributor, won the 1970 Canadian Formula Ford championship in a Hawke and decided to move up to Formula B with the DL6B for 1971. Unfortunately, the car arrived three months late, which severely restricted any opportunity for Magwood to test and develop the car. Nonetheless, Magwood did manage to capture a pole position, a couple of regional race wins, and a third at Troise Rivieres with the DL6B.

Further history for DL6B/2 is reported by OldRacingCars.com as follows:

New to Gary Magwood (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and raced in Canadian Formula B in 1971, with Castrol sponsorship. Magwood For 1972, Don Mason (Agincourt, Toronto, Ontario) traded his Formula A Chinook for Magwood’s Hawke, but Magwood has no recollection of acquiring a Chinook. Raced by Mason in the 1972 Players Canadian Formula B series. According to a later advert for the car, it was owned by Ludwig Heimrath (Scarborough, Ontario) between 1973 and 1992, and then sold via Jacques Rivard (Ontario) to Scott Yturria (Elmhurst, NY). It was partially restored for Yturria by Skip Weld in Florida, then sold to Al Hughes (Texas) in 1998 and raced by him. Then to Ron Hornig (Laramie, Wyoming), restored by JD McDermott of Front Range Motorsports, and maintained for Hornig by J&L Fabricating (Puyallup, WA). Sold by Hornig to Ric Baribeault (Houston, TX) in January 2025. Entered by Baribeault for the 2025 COTA SpeedTour at Circuit of The Americas, Thu, Oct 30 – Sun, Nov 2, 2025.
