1973 Ford Escort RS1600
2 Liter BDG Giant Killer and race winner
POA
History
The Escort was converted for historic racing by Brayon Classic Engineering in the early 2000’s. Since its purchase the car has been professionally maintained by GMT Racing in Connecticut. It is fast, reliable, nimble, and a real giant killer. It continually beats Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, E-Type Jaguars, Datsun 240Z’s, Porsche 911’s and more. It can consistently run low 1.01 laps times at Lime Rock. It also turns laps in the low 2.37 range at Road America. That’s many seconds per lap quicker than the other cars in its class. It has the potential to go even faster.
Description
The Escort has a low miles Sherwood Engines 2 liter Cosworth dry sump BDG with mechanical injection. The engine produces approximately 285 horsepower. The engine performance is monitored and tuned with an exhaust gas gauge. A fuel pressure gauge was also included in addition to the usual gauges.
The BDG’s power is driven through a rebuilt five speed ZF gearbox. The car’s current gearbox is fitted with synchros. However, a second rebuilt ZF five speed gearbox will also come with the car, and that one is a dog box.
The Escort’s body shell was reinforced for safety and performance during its build. An Atlas rear axle was also fitted. A new fuel cell was installed in 2022. In 2023-24 the car was rewired and replumbed. All safety equipment is new.
The Escort comes with four sets of wheels; 2 lightweight sets (new in 2023) and two heavier sets. Spares also include springs, fuel pumps, ignition parts etc.
An additional fresh Cosworth BDG is available by separate negotiation.
When you buy a highly developed, highly prepared car like this Escort, you can focus your time and efforts on driving and having fun at the front. Even better, in this case you can buy the car for a fraction of its build and development costs. The work has already been done, and the money spent. You get to reap all the benefits of this every time you strap in.
There are so many ways to win with this particular Escort, and on many levels. Did we mention the fan support for the little car that takes on the big goliaths and beats them? That’s fun too.
