1980 March Super Vee
Ex-Wilbur Bunce Racing factory team back up car
$25,000. Great for the new A2V Championship in the U.S. and Canada
History
This was the backup car, chassis number 6, at Wilbur Bunce Racing for the 1980 Robert Bosch Pro Formula Super Vee Series. Wilber Bunce was the March Super Vee importer during that time. Bunce ran team cars in that period for Josele Garza, Dennis Firestone, Bob Lazier, and others. The Firestone and Lazier cars ran with sponsorship from Montgomery Ward.
Chassis #6 remained as a spare until Randy Taylor purchased it from Wilbur Bunce Racing in 1985. Taylor, a commercial pilot, took the March through driver’s school. Thereafter he converted the March to C Sports Racer specifications using a Bunce-designed full body configuration. Taylor raced the car occasionally until 2005. At that point he began to restore the car back to its original Super Vee specification.
Vince Tjelmeland then bought the March and completed the restoration in 2013. Tjelmeland restored the March with Montgomery Ward livery as a tribute to his friend, USAC Mini Indy Super Vee Champion and 1980 CART Rookie of the Year, Dennis Firestone. Period photos below show Dennis in his Montgomery Ward March Super Vee.
In 2017, Tjelmeland raced the now restored chassis #6 and won the VARA Super Vee Championship with it.
The current owner bought the March in 2023. Due to other commitments, he only raced the car once, with SVRA at Laguna Seca in 2023. The car was quick, turning laps times faster than the Pro Mazdas that were there. The rear uprights were rebuilt just prior to that event. After the race, the car was prepped for the next SVRA race at Pahrump by a race prep shop in Southern California. The car remains in that condition and at the same prep shop.
Description
The March is equipped with a Bob Morris 1600 c.c. engine with Redline electronic fuel injection. The engine is bolted to a Hewland Mk9 four speed gearbox. The wheels are also period correct with 6” wheels in the front and 8” in the rear.
The March is currently configured with a high roll bar for a tall driver. The original roll bar comes with the car. The March also comes with a second set of wheels and two additional gear sets. Additional parts available at additional cost.
Importantly, the March now qualifies for the new, 2026, A2Z Championship Series for Formula Atlantic, Formula 2, and Formula Super Vee in the U.S. and Canada. This March is one of the best bargains for that Championship. In addition, you can also run the March with your local wings & slicks series. All of this for a Formula Ford price.
