1983 Ralt RT5 Formula Super Vee

Ralt American Team Car. 2nd at Long Beach.

This car just recently came to us. It is now the only RT5 we have left. Chassis number: 401

Log Book number: 83-272 RT5-401.

Ex-1981 SCCA Formula Atlantic Champion, Hubert Phipps,’ car. 1983 Ralt American entry and Long Beach podium winner, 2nd place to Michael Andretti.

The Ralt continued to be campaigned in 1983 by Ralt American with drivers Tom Garland and Michael Roe.

Ben Gustafson took over the reins for 1984. According to OldRacingCars.com, he finished 15th at Long Beach, and 5th at Phoenix and Milwaukee. His final race with the Ralt was at Michigan International Speedway, where the engine failed after 12 laps.

See the video below with Gustafson, who qualified 6th,  racing at Cleveland. He appears at 7:36 in the video stopping to get a front wing repair.

The Ralt was later stored from 1992 until 2005.  The car was then recommissioned and has raced in historic races ever since.

Carbureted Loyning 193 HP engine with 12 hours on it. Last run in 2017.

Spares include:

Set of BBS wheels

Pair of front wings

Set of early side pods (1985 versions are on the car)

Approximately 12 gear sets

New nose box parts

Misc. other bits and pieces

This is a great, competitive, inexpensive to buy and maintain entry for Masters Formula Atlantic Plus. It can also race with vintage racing groups such as CSRG, SVRA, VARA, and many others.

This Ralt has nice history too, being a Ralt American team car, and its podium finish at Long Beach during the heydays of Formula Super Vee racing.

It is a great time to get a Super Vee, especially a Ralt RT5- the benchmark Formula Super Vee. They have performance and styling comparable to (and sometime better than) a Formula Atlantic for currently less than half the price of a comparable Formula Atlantic car. They are less expensive to maintain too.

Don’t get caught out. Now is the time to get one. These values, and your fun, have nowhere to go but up.
