History

This is the 1986 Lola T86/00, chassis number HU 07, that was specially prepared by the Domino’s Pizza Team Shierson for Al Unser Jr.  Al, known as “The King of Long Beach,” opened the season in the Lola with a second place finish at Long Beach. He followed that up with 5th at Indy. Thereafter Al and HU 07 finished on the podium at Portland.

Those races were followed up by a series of top 10 finishes at The Meadowlands, Cleveland, Toronto, and Michigan. At Mid-Ohio, Al brought the Lola home in 5th. However, at Road America and Laguna Seca, the combo could not crack the top 10.

It all came good, however, at the final race of the season, the Miami Grand Prix. Al and HU 07 won it.

HU 07 was then retired and retained as part of the Shierson racing car  collection. The car was next sold  to RM Motorsports. In 2001 RM sold the Lola to Paul Maclasko in Arizona. Maclasko retained the Lola for three years before selling it to Cauley Ferrari in Michigan in 2004. In 2009, Cauley sold the car to Graham Mein in Australia. The Lola currently resides in, and races in, Australia. We can assist you with shipping worldwide.

Description

The Lola has a fresh Slade engine with brand new heads and a handful of test laps on it and no races. The car has new brake rotors, seat belts, fire system, and an updated fuel cell installed in 2014. Spares include a complete gearbox case, gears, right and left side pods, and significant other bits. There are also a set of spare wheels and a set of nearly new Avon tires for them. Some of the spares can be seen in the photos below. If you are seriously interested, we can send you a comprehensive set of photos of all the spares. Of course the remote starter, seen in the photos, also comes with the car.

You can buy these IndyCars as projects, or rollers, for about $100,000 give or take. Fully prepared versions are about double that. Complete engines cost about $65,000. We recently sold the ex-Scott Pruett Michigan 500 winning 1995 Lola T95/00 IndyCar for more than the offering price of this Al Jr. Lola. The ex-Sebastian Bourdais 2005 Lola IndyCar sold for $201,000 in October, 2022. A 1985 Lola T900 – ex Mario Andretti, sold in April, 2024, for $205,000.

This Lola’s history has been researched by CART historian, Richard Perry. His report, including all of the car’s races and results, will come with the car.

The Lola is currently residing in Australia. We can get you a quote to ship it to you. Please provide us your nearest port, or specific address. The owner has imported and exported race cars to/from Australia for years, and is very familiar with the process and the shippers. He has offered to deliver the car to the port and to oversee loading to make sure everything arrives in the same condition as shipped.

The Historic IndyCars have previously been the support race for the current IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, including in 2024. This Al Jr. Lola was invited for the 2025 event. However, the initial purchaser was unable to complete the transaction. That is why the Lola is currently available for sale. We are not saying that this car comes with an open invitation to Long Beach. What we are saying is that this car was vetted by the race organizers and was invited. It will still be eligible for any future Long Beach Historic IndyCar races, as well as all of the other Historic IndyCar events for this genre.

This is a great buy on the famous, highly popular, race-winning, 1986 Al Unser Jr./Domino’s Pizza Lola T86/00 IndyCar. This is a car that is sought after by race organizers because of its history and fan popularity. Imagine sitting on the grid at Long Beach in the car that finished second there at the hands of “The King of Long Beach,” six time Long Beach winner Al Unser Jr.
