1987 Apache S2000 (87S-07)

History

The Apache Sports 2000s are an evolution of the 1980s March Sports 2000s. March driver, Richard Morgan, was licensed by March to produce the cars in the U.S. under the name Apache Cars LTD. They produced 13 cars; six in 1986 and seven in 1987.  These were the March based cars with modifications that included a stiffer chassis, and moving the shocks, springs, and brakes from inboard to outboard. The cars were successful with this particular Apache, chassis number 87S-07 (the last one produced) winning the SCCA Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Series Championship with David Labovitz in 1991. 

After the 1992 season, Labovitz sold his, and his teammate’s Apache (chassis 87S-06) to the same buyer. Thereafter we do not pick up the history of chassis 87S-07 again until 2010 when Pete Pedley’s name appears in the SCCA log book as the owner. 

Pete and various drivers actively campaigned the car on the East Coast from 2010 to 2014. The Apache was then rebuilt in 2015. Then it was raced on and off from 2016 to 2022 when it was sold to the current owner. 

Since the purchase in 2022, the Apache has been a consistent front runner with VARA. The car has scored multiple wins and podiums, and it captured the 2024 class championship. It also captured a class win with CSRG at Laguna Seca in 2023. 

In 2025 and 2026 the Apache has been competing in the Sports Racer Challenge Series capturing multiple podium finishes. It remains ready to go. 

Description

The Apache is powered by a fresh, legal, 2.0 liter Pinto engine with one weekend on it. It is equipped with a stainless steel exhaust header. The engine is bolted to a Hewland Mk9 gearbox with CV joints. The gearbox was just gone through and re-jigged by Michael Meindorfer, a Northern California Hewland gearbox expert. 

Suspension is by double A-arms front and rear with adjustable heim joints. The damping is controlled by double adjustable, coilover, Bilstein aluminum shocks. The brakes are Girling LD 65 ventilated disc brakes front and rear. The bodywork is fiberglass/kevlar. 

These March/Apache cars were successful in period and remain so today. Bob Lobenberg raced his March 82S to two SCCA National Championships in 1982 and 1984. Kurt Thiim raced his 81S to the overall win at the 1981 British Sports 2000 Championship at Silverstone. 

The Apache offered here has won an SCCA Regional Championship, a VARA Championship, and has race wins and podiums in the current Sports Racer Challenge Series. It also comes with a fresh engine and freshly set up Hewland. It is being offered at an entry level price for a fresh, recently race-proven, very competitive car (2nd at its most recent race with CSRG at Laguna Seca in June, 2026). 

These are affordable, easy to maintain, cars. They are like Formula Fords but with fenders, more power, and more grip. They can turn lap times as quick as many of the wings & slicks cars. They are also easy and enjoyable to drive. You can tow them with your single axle trailer behind your SUV or motorhome, or can do an arrive and drive program with a local pro shop. Virtually all pro race shops know how to take care of these cars as they have been around a long time and use very standard bits. The Sports 2000 cars can also be a great practice day car to keep your skills in shape. 

Come join the fun in the Sports Racer Challenge Series, or S2NA (Sports 2000 North America) and/or run with your local club in the U.S. or Europe. You can also race the Apache with SCCA in regional races. In addition it is a great car for new drivers wanting to go through driver’s school and get their road racing licenses.
