History
This is the Pontiac Grand Prix built by Petty Enterprises for Richard Petty’s road course effort in 1991. Richard raced the car at Sears Point and Watkins Glen. In 1991 they finished 34th at Sears Point, and 9th at Watkins Glen.
Petty raced this same car on the road courses in 1992, his final year in his record shattering NASCAR carer. He drove this car as part of his farewell Fan Appreciation Tour. For 1992, King Richard finished 21st at Sears Point, and 28th at Watkins Glen.
In 1993 Rick Wilson raced the Pontiac on the road courses as #44. He finished 8th at Sears Point, and 22nd at Watkins Glen. Wally Dallenbach Jr. drove the car for Petty in 1994. He scored a 4th at Sears Point, and and 13th at The Glen. Bobby Hamilton raced the Petty Pontiac 1995-97. The car was then retired from racing. His best result was a 14th at Sonoma in 1995.
Since the car’s retirement from the NASCAR circuit, it has been active in the historic racing circuit. The Pontiac has raced with the Historic Stock Car Racing Association. It has competed in the Rolex Monterery Reunion. It was shown and demonstrated last year at the Velocity Invitational at Sonoma Raceway. The Pontiac was even scheduled to be reunited with featured guest, Richard Petty, at the 2025 Velocity Invitational until the event was recently postponed until 2026.
The car comes with a 1998 letter from Richard Petty to Trace Armstrong and Eric DeBord authenticating the car and presenting the car’s period racing history. It will also come with race records, setup sheets, photos taken during the restoration of the car at the Petty race shop, photos of Richard signing the car, photos of Richard with the current owners, the Farewell Tour book, and more.
Description
In the late 1990’s, the Petty Pontiac was restored and race-prepared by Petty’s race team at their Randelman, North Carolina, race shop. To get an inside look at the construction of a 1991 Petty NASCAR Pontiac Grand Prix car, please see the Petty Garage teardown of one of their 1991 stock cars at Petty’s Garage.
The car is powered by a correct NASCAR pushrod 358 cubic inch V8 producing approximately 730 horsepower.
Since it was restoration the car has done a handful of historic races. It has been continually professionally maintained by a NASCAR prep shop located at Sonoma Raceway. The car is track worthy as-is, but should have a standard race prep done before being run in anger.
This is an opportunity to own and race a legend, the last of Richard Petty’s famous Petty Blue and STP red NASCAR stock cars. Some of Richard’s stock cars, like his 1970 Plymouth Super Bird have been bid to $3,500,000 and that was not enough to get the car.
While there are many copies of Petty cars, and those with dubious histories built up from shreds of former cars, this one is the real deal. It was built by Petty, raced by Petty, used by the Petty team for other Petty team drivers, then finally restored by the Pettys and documented by Richard Petty himself. If you want a competitive historic NASCAR stock car with long term collector value, owning the last of breed is always a good move. Fun to race now, and long term value down the road.
