This 1963 Split Window Corvette is probably the most-road-raced C2 Corvette in history, having competed in twenty-five professional series races with durations/distances from 200 miles to twelve hours from 1971 to 1974.
In addition, the Corvette raced sixteen SCCA Regional or National race weekends and thirteen sanctioned Vintage race weekends. The car raced on not less than 24 different race tracks, and completed over 2,600 pro-series racing laps. It also earned $8,710.00 in prize money.
The Corvette raced not only in SCCA and IMSA events, but also in the FIA 6 Hour Continental Race at Daytona International Speedway, as well as an International race in Monterrey, Mexico (which it won).
This 1963 Corvette spent most of its racing life competing against newer, more powerful cars. These cars were often factory backed with pro drivers. Yet in 1972, this 9 year old car, with a privateer owner/driver, beat the best GTO cars, drivers, and teams to win IMSA’s GTO Championship. It became know as “The Giant Killer.”
In 1973, the now 10 year old car finished an amazing 11th overall, out of 72 starters, in the Sebring 12 Hour Race. It was also the 2nd place Corvette out of the 18 that started.
After the Corvette was restored in 1993, by its original race car driver/owner, it claimed numerous pole positions and race wins in the thirteen vintage races it ran through 6-22-03.
In 2003, the Corvette was retired from racing with an overall win in the one-hour endurance race at the SVRA vintage event at Sebring, and a 2nd in class and 4th overall finish in the 30 car All-Corvette feature race at Mid-Ohio.
Since 2003 the Corvette has been used only for significant event displays and exhibition laps.
Description
The Corvette had a total restoration (not frame-off) in ’93. Since then it was raced with multiple victories in eight vintage events in ’93 and ’94.
The car was then stored for seven years and raced in eight more vintage events in ’02 and ’03, again with winning results.
In ’07 the Corvette was invited to be on display, and to do some exhibition laps, at the 50th anniversary of Virginia International Raceway.
In 2012 the Corvette participated in a parade lap before the start of the Sebring 12 Hour race as a former Sebring entrant and finisher (1973).
The Corvette is in excellent “older restoration” condition. It would need to be freshened up in order to race today. Still sounding and looking great today, and capable of exhibition laps, it would need such things as new tires, belts, hoses, brake fluid, fuel cell bladder, etc. to be competitive on a race track. The transmission and differential are in good condition, and the engine still runs strong, but has substantial time on it.
