History

Chassis number: S/N 68RS

This is the ex-Jersey Racing Partnership Merlyn raced by Tony Sargeant. The car comes with documented 1965 U.K. championship winning history. This Merlyn was also featured in Autosport Magazine in 1965.

Since 1987, the Merlyn has been raced in U.S. historic racing including such events as the Monterey Historics/Rolex Reunion.

The Merlyn’s most recent race was in November, 2024, at the CSRG Finale at Thunderhill. The car qualified 1st in class and won its class in the Saturday race turning laps of 2.03 on old tires with a new driver. For comparison, the top Lotus 23B, and 2024 under 2 liter Rolex Reunion class winner, with new tires and a fresh Richardson engine, runs laps at Thunderhill in the 2.02 range.

In the Sunday race the Merlyn was leading again when it was brought in with a lap to go due to a deteriorating metalastic donut. Both donuts have since been replaced, and the Merlyn is ready to go.

The Merlyn comes with 2012 FIA HTP papers, and HSCC Vehicle Identity papers.

Description

The Merlyn was the subject of a frame-up restoration in 2009-2010, including a new chrome moly frame. The original frame will come with the car. The car also still retains its original chassis tag, with chassis number 68 RS.

Since restoration there are six weekends (approximately 7-9 hours) on the Merlyn’s 1600 c.c. Loyning dry sump Lotus Twin Cam with 45 DCOE Webers. The twin cam’s power is driven through a Hewland Mk6 five speed gearbox. The Merlyn rides on Panasport wheels and Koni shocks. The belts are good through 2025.

Spares include some original wheels and a passenger seat with restraints.

The Merlyn was last offered for sale in 2018 at $112,000. Since then it has had three races on it, plus a fresh respray.

The current owner is now “thinning the herd.” As a result you can now get this same authentic under 2 liter Merlyn sports racer with period championship winning race history, the original AND the replacement chassis, the original chassis tag, period documentation, and full ownership history for just $78,000.

You can race this front-running Merlyn in the Gurney Cup 45 minute two driver enduro at the 2025 Goodwood Members’ Meeting. You can run at the front in the USRRC feature at the 2025 Rolex Monterey Reunion.  Race the Merlyn in the HSCC Guards Trophy, or the Goodwood Revival Madgwick Cup (depending upon that year’s class designation). You can also race the Merlyn in the Masters Sports Car Legends series. Basically you can race this car every weekend all over the world.

The Merlyn is also priced tens of thousands below comparable frontline competitors. It is genuine bargain, and an absolute joy to drive. We’ve raced it ourselves, so we speak from personal experience.
