History

This is chassis number RT5-460, and SCCA Bosch Formula Super Vee Pro-Series number 350. Chassis RT5-460 was raced by Jeff MacPherson in the 1984 Bosch Super Vee Championship. MacPherson went on to finish third in the Championship that season. He also won the race at Michigan,  beating Arie Luyendyk to the line.

In the photos section below you can see photos of the chassis tags, and a television screen capture photo of the car winning at Michigan. You can also find a photo of the Ralt at the 1984 Laguna Seca Bosch Super Vee race at  Wildhirt.com. MacPherson and the Ralt finished 3rd.

The Ralt was later re-tubbed by Marc Bahner in 1988, and converted to C-Sports Racer specs with a Beasley body. Legacy Motor Club sports agent and attorney Alan Miller drove the Ralt to an impressive six SCCA National wins in 1992, and six more National victories in 1993. The period SCCA “National Event Winner” decals still adorn the Ralt’s bodywork.

The Ralt’s history thereafter is unknown until it appeared for sale in a video in 2014. It also appeared for sale in 2016 on eBay, which was later picked up in a BringATrailer article. In 2021 the car, still in its same configuration and condition including its Super Vee and CSR bodywork, was purchased by its next owner. The Ralt is currently being stored at a race prep shop in Southern California.

Description

The RT5’s aluminum monocoque tub is fitted up front with A-arms, magnesium uprights, and Inboard coil over shocks with remote reservoirs. The rear suspension is rocker operated inboard coil over shocks with remote reservoirs.

Both the CSR and FSV bodywork are fiberglass. The cockpit features a removable Momo steering wheel, RaceTech gauges, and cockpit adjustable front and rear sway bars.

The Ralt is powered by a Toyota 4AGE 1600 c.c. four valve dry sump engine.  These engines in Formula Atlantic trim produce approximately 250 h.p. The Toyota’s power is driven through a Hewland Mk9 gearbox with upgraded, stronger, Mk5 gears.

This is a storied Ralt RT5. It finished third in the Bosch Pro Super Vee Series, and then went on to dominate in its second configuration as an SCCA C-Sports Racer. Since then, the car has seen precious track time on its new Marc Bahner tub. It’s got good bones.

So, you can go through this car and run it as-is, or in its CSR configuration. You could also sell the Toyota 4AGE engine to fund and install a new Super Vee engine. Then you can restore the car back to its race-winning Bosch Pro Series configuration and livery.

We think it is  a win either way, and good fun.
